Eighteen of the European Union Member States have stressed they wish to have a common approach for the safety management of Titanium Dioxide. As reported in our news item of 2 May 2019, France has adopted a Decree that would restrict the use of titanium dioxide as of 1 January 2020.

Arguing the restriction to be an emergency measure, the country has taken an individual action without waiting for a European response to the matter based on the conclusion of its local food safety assessor ANSES. The European Food Safety Authority on the other hand argues there are too many uncertainties and gaps in currently available scientific data to conclude on the risks and that the recent ANSES opinion does not provide any new findings that would lead to reconsider this preliminary conclusion. EFSA did however request for further investigation of the potential safety risks of titanium dioxide in order to be able to provide a more founded Opinion.
