Through the TRIS notification portal, Italy has submitted a draft regulation for the establishment of maximum levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in foods, including food supplements. THC is the active compound of cannabis. EU Regulation 1307/2013 allows for the production of Cannabis sativa L. varieties under the condition the THC content does not exceed 0.2%. However, the approach towards cannabis for use in foodstuff is currently not regulated at EU level. The Italian Regulation would allow for 2 mg/kg of THC in food supplements containing foodstuffs derived from hemp.
