Public opinions on HusiFood incident and risk analysis report

Shanghai Husi Food Co., Ltd, the supplier of fast food such as McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken in China, was exposed to a use a large number of expired meat to manufacture products on July 20, 2014, which caused high attention of China and international community on the safety of using recycled food and expired raw materials to manufacture products (this incident is referred to as Husi incident). There are many different opinions on whether this incident is food safety issue or not in industry. At February 2016, The People’s Court of Jiading District, Shanghai City in China made a public sentence on the Husi incident in accordance with the law, and the criminal liability of Husi has finally settled: the crime of producing and selling fake and shoddy products.

Foodmate has systematically reviewed and sorted out the Husi incident from the occurrence to the final judgment, including the analysis on the official law enforcement basis, on the behavior’s compliance and related risk of Shanghai Husi Food Co., Ltd, on the status of industry as well as the suggestions to the enterprises, which can be used by related meat products manufactures for reference on the self-examination of internal system risk, analysis of possible risks, and the quality safety management of industrial chain.

Risk analysis report on the contamination of listeria monocytogenes in Bule Bell ice cream

In April 2015, at least 8 persons in two states of the United States were hospitalized for consumption of Blue Bell ice cream infected with Listeria monocytogenes, in which 3 persons died as a result from this. The sales company in China of Blue Bell Co., Ltd (U.S.A.) recalled and destroyed all the unsold ice cream products of Blue Bell. Then Xinhuanet of China, Beijing News and other media had tracked to report it consecutively. With the advent of summer, ice cream has incurred the high concerns of society and consumers on the safety of ice cream as a refreshing necessity.

Foodmate has summarized the public opinions related to the food-borne diseases of Blue Bell ice cream (overview of incident, measures taken by company and government), made a monographic study on Listeria monocytogenes as the main cause of food-borne diseases, (brief introduction, the main source of pollution, hazard analysis, main domestic and overseas regulatory requirements, and historical events), and given the risk warning and rationalized proposals for enterprises.

Incident report on carcinogenicity of Ferrero chocolate

On July 4, 2016, a test from a private food inspection organization in German made the well-known chocolate brand in the world, Ferrero, into a carcinogenic turmoil. They inspected more than 20 of snacks in the local market by sampling, and found that 3 kinds of food including KinderReigel contain carcinogens “aromatic mineral oil”. After the test result was published, most of the international media reported with “carcinogenicity” as a gimmick. At that moment, Ferrero was pushed to the focus of public opinions.

Foodmate has summarized the process of this incident (including background, media reports, and enterprise responses, etc.), analyzed the scientific information of “possible carcinogenic aromatic mineral oil” (what is the aromatic mineral oil, the source of it in food, the regulatory requirements of each country, the scientific advices of international risk assessment, and the similar cases occurred in history) and proposed the suggestions responding to such challenges for the enterprises.

Analysis report on regulatory system and standard comparison in both sides of the Taiwan Straits

With the development of economy and trade, the trade of food between the two sides of the strait in mainland China and Taiwan is increased day by day, and that whether the results of food inspection of both sides of the Taiwan Strait can be mutual recognized becomes a topic mainly concerned by the inspection & quarantine bureau at each trading port. If the mutual recognition system of cross-strait supervision, certification & accreditation and test can be established, it will greatly reduce the inspection & quarantine costs and customs clearance efficiency of cross-strait food in importation and exportation trade.

On the basis of summarizing the institutional system, regulatory system and standard system of food safety supervision in mainland of China and Taiwan, Foodmate has discussed and analyzed the possibility of mutual recognition on the food of both sides of the Taiwan Straits from the perspective of policy environment, technical difficulty and gained experience combining the actual situation of importation & exportation inspection and quarantine of food of both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and predicted the development direction of trading and inspection & quarantine of food of both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
